White Heat

White Heat (1949) starring James Cagney, Myrna Loy, Edmond O'Brien. Cagney plays a gangster named Cody Jarrett with serious mommy issues. When he goes into the joint, his ma gets killed trying to protect him. But he escapes and continues his life of crime. Pretty standard hard-boiled gangster movie has a historical place on the cusp of the '50s, but offers little beyond the rantings and ravings of Cagney as the unhinged bad guy who suffers from serious headaches. This film didn't really do much for me, and seems to have lost something with the passage of time. (Subtitles in English are available for the hearing-impaired, as well as closed captions.) Grade: B-
