My Beautiful Laundrette (1986) starring Saeed Jaffrey, Roshan Seth, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gordon Warnecke. A young Pakistani man (Warnecke) tries to make a go of it in Thatcher-era England, where he is called "wog" and worse. He starts his career by taking over management of his uncle's Laundromat, which he and his friend Johnny (Day-Lewis) renovate with stolen drug money. Things are complicated by the fact that he and Johnny are gay lovers. Johnny's friends don't want him getting involved with the "Pakis," and matters eventually escalate to violence. The subtitles are good. Grade: B
