The Reader (DVD)

The Reader (2008) starring Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, David Kross. In 1958 in West Berlin, young Michael (Kross) has a surprising love affair with an older woman, Hanna (Winslet). But Hanna abruptly disappears. Eight years later, as a law student, Michael attends a trial where he is surprised to see Hanna charged as a Nazi death camp guard. Fiennes plays the mature Michael, who communicates with Hanna while she is in prison. Winslet won an Oscar for her portrayal of Hanna. Although Fiennes' portion of the movie (approximately the final third) is weak, it is still worth seeing "The Reader" to witness Winslet's performance. Grade: A-
